The History of Defunct Marine Mammal Parks

The Memories and the Truths

Marineland of New Zealand, Napier, NZ

This park lost its last dolphin in 2008, Kelly who arrived at the park with Shona, another dolphin in 1974. After a post-mortem, the suspected cause of death was stomach cancer. Although the park is still open now, it was closed for a couple of months by the local council from the 11th September 2008, after Kelly's death. After Kelly's death, no more dolphins could be purchased (due to protesters/restrictions on their old facilities/lack of getting a deal) and there were worries about the sustainability of the park. Today however, the park is home to sealions, new zealand fur seals and penguins.
